Hi,
Hypoglycemia is one of the most life threatening complications during a surgery. Local
anesthetic can mask a hypoglycemia-altered mental status which may cause permanent
brain injury.
Common causes of intraoperative seizure are hypoglycemia or low blood glucose level, electrolyte imbalances, medications like local anaesthetics, hypoxemia or low level of oxygen in blood, surgical related effects.
The most common adverse reactions to local anaesthetic agents are seizure. Neurologic dedeficits, both sensory and motor, correspond to the blocked nerves that may be transient or permanent. Sometimes, at high doses they act as pro-convulsant drugs, lowering the seizure threshold in the
cerebral cortex, amyglada and
hippocampus, leading to develop seizures.
Take care. Hope you have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
