Could Mild Fever After Unprotected Sex Indicate HIV?
I had unprotected sex with a female on her period on New year's day. I'm a 25 year old healthy male. 4 days after the sex I got a sore throat and mild sickness, the highest fever I had was 99.3. the sickness lasted about 4 days. I went to the local health department exactly 14 days after the sex occurred and I received a rapid hiv test. it came back negative, but I know it's not conclusive until the 3 month mark. do you think I have HIV?
Hi, Welcome to HCM. Earliest manifestations of HIV could occur only after 3-4 weeks of high risk contact, if there is any infection. Anything earlier (4 days) could unlikely be due to HIV infection. Moreover the fever in Primary HIV infection would last for more than a week or two. So your symptoms were unlikely to be due to HIV. Sore throat and fever is so common and it could occur to anybody without HIV, that too following a close intimacy. This could be an ordinary viral or bacterial fever. Regarding the test, as you had mentioned it would be more conclusive after 12 weeks of high risk contact. Dr S.Muruagn
first of all you have to be sure about your parter's hiv status whether she is hiv positive or not then you have to think in that direction. In your case fever is just because of some sort of infection mostly throat as you have mentioned you have throat pain also nothing else. So mild fever after unprotected sex doesn't mean hiv unless and until it is proven.
