Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Could Mild Plaque Build Up In Carotid Artery Be Treated Through Diet?
I am a 68 year old male who recently had the following work performed by a cardiologist in New Jersey: blood work; stress test; echo cardiogram; EKG; and carotid artery ultersound. The results were all normal except the carotid artery test showed a mild plaque build-up. The cardiologist recommended that I start taking Pravastatin (40 mg) and aspirin (81 milligrams) daily. I am in good shape and exercise in a gym 6 days a week. I hate to take medication like this unless it is absolutely necessary. How serious is this mild plaque build-up and can I possibly treat this condition by dieting? I am concerned about the side effects of this medication. Thanks very much. As the carotid arteryplaque is there, it is necessary that you should continue with the medicines prescribed by your cardiologist. There is always a risk that it may increase without medicines. Also, you are supposed to prevent this types of plaques in other arteries also. Of course, fat free diet is always helpful in this condition.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
