Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I asked my Dr. why my rib cage hurt...he put pressure on it and said, you ve got a floating rib . That s all he said!!! I never heard of it and did research and found very confusing interpretations. My primary received other Dr. s report and she said, we ll check when your annual is due. (4 months!) These are Drs. that I ve trusted for 10 years and now there seems to be a subliminal distance or interest. I hope I m wrong. I still don t know what floating rib is...what causes it....dangerous? I was also told that I had too many CT s last year so I have to wait to have any more. I m becoming discouraged.

HI
Thanks for posting your query.
First of all relax . Floating ribs are not abnormal . It just means that the rib has no attachment to the sternum ( chest bone ) which is quite normal. It is seen is all and doesn't cause any problems .
But there has to be some other cause of pain in the rib cage which needs evaluation. If not CT at least get an X ray of your chest to see if there is any problem in the chest .
Anyway as of now don't worry about the floating rib as it is normal .
Hope this information was useful to you. Any clarifications feel free to ask .
