Could Periventricular Ischemic Changes And Cortical Atrophy Indicate Onset Of Alzheimer S?

Hi, my father is 79years old. He has been having episodes of severe lung infection since 2013. In addition to this, he has been having episodes of temporary memory loss, slurred speech, no concept of day or night, loss of motor skills, does not recognize what medicines he is taking, even though he is MD in pathology. His CT scan report states Paraventricular ischaemic changes, cortical atrophy, small infarcts in both MCA territories. Can he take some preventive medicine for his condition? Does his condition lead to Alzeimers? Thank you for taking the time to answer my question

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

No, this does not lead to Alzheimer’s but to a vascular dementia which you already describe. I’m a bit puzzled that he, being an MD himself, doesn’t get a proper treatment. In any case his blood pressure must be strictly controlled and be not higher than 120/70. Blood pressure control is key when dealing with vascular damages of the brain.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Alexander Davis, General & Family Physician
