Hi Doctor, My wife is pregnant running 8th week. Age is 22. HBSAg test result came positive. She did not have any history of jaundice and no blood transfusion. what is the risk involved in continuing the pregnancy? Now what other tests need to be done to determine the risk.

Hi, Ihave gone through your question. In case of HbsAg positive women, there is no risk in continuing the pregnancy, as Hepatitis B virus is usually not transmitted transplacentally to the fetus. It transmits to the baby while delivery, for preventing which immunoglobulins and vaccine is given immediately to the newborn.
Your wife needs to undergo several test to assess the severity and activity of the infection, like Anti-Hbs antibody levels, HbeAg levels, liver function tests and ultrasound of liver. I would suggest you to consult with a gastromedicine specialist for expert care.
Hope you found this answer helpful.
Wishing you both good health.
