Could Premature Atrial Contractions Be The Cause For Pain In Chest?
I have been diagnosed with premature atrial contractions. Occasionally I will get sharp pains on the left side of my chest. Today this happened and I could feel the PACs were occurring when I felt my carotid pulse. Could the PACs be the reason for the chest pain and is there anything I can do about it?
PAC is usually symptomless in majority of cases, and harmless also. The only symptoms may be feeling of own loud heart beat or feeling of no heart beat occasionally in some cases. It may be due to some temporary cause like electrolyte abnormality or some drug's side effect which will go away with correction of these. It may also be due to some permanent causes like some cardiac pathology which if symptomatic may require treatment. If PAC is producing pain, fainting, breathlessness etc then there may chance of conversion of PAC into some cardiac arrhythmia eg Atrial fibrillation, Atrial flutter or PSVT. So you should contact your doctor for checkup. To prevent this, you should stay away from Stress, Anxiety, Exersion, Caffeine, Alcohol, Tobacco and other addictive substance; Practice yoga and meditation; and regular checkups periodically.
