Could Protrusion Of Hernia In Abdomen Be Harmful?

I have a surgical related abdominal hernia. I first noticed the protrusion 4 years ago but thought nothing of it at the time. About 18 months ago the bladder infedtions and bowel symptoms increased intensely. The bulge in my stomach is very protruded at this point. How serious is this condition? My doctor has set up a consultation appt with a surgeon for May 20? Should I wait to see the surgeon or go to emergency care as soon as possible?

Hello,

You have surgical related abdominal hernia. Presently the hernia is protruding and you are experiencing increased bowel symptoms and bladder problems. Get clinically examined by a Surgeon. If your hernia is increasing in size, it can cause complications like bowel blockage.

Yes, protrusion can be harmful because at times, the contents of a hernia can get caught inside (incarcerated) and the blood supply can get block (strangulated) causing serious medical emergency condition. Neglect will cause hernia pain continuously and it may get worse. Get clinically evaluated and get all required blood tests and imaging tests, ultrasound done so that treatment can be started at the earliest.

You will be given a combination of conservative treatment, physical therapy and recommended surgery if required. Stay away from addictions if any. Do regular walking, maintain healthy weight. If diabetic, control your blood sugar level at all cost.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hi,

A hernia is a condition in which an internal organ or tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or tissue. If you have bladder or bowel symptoms which are not relieving, associated with pain which is worsening, nausea or bloating, go to emergency department immediately or else you can wait for general surgeon appointment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks.
