Could Prunes Be The Cause For Flaky Bowel Movements?

Hi there, I have been having digestive issues since last October, and have seen numerous Drs. I am now in a position where I am able to have solid BM, although I am gassy and there is mucous down there. Also, my BM seems very flaky and sometimes have undigested food present. I was told to eat prunes each day (I was originally dealing with diarrhea, then constipation hence the prunes). Could the prunes be the cause of the slightly flakey BMs? They are very easy to pass, and are often very long but are definitely on the loose side. Also, had stomach pulsing, followed by explosive diarrhea and Gas today. But I am putting that down to eating rubbish fast food yesterday. Also feeling very sick. Ugh. Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Yes, prunes are natural laxatives so they can cause loose stool episodes and even explosive diarrhea. Since you mentioned you have alternating constipation and diarrhea, you should get yourself checked out for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) by your GP. Alternating bowel movements, abdominal pain that relieves on defecation are symptoms of IBS. A proper diagnosis might help maintain your bowel movements.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
