Could Recurring Progressive Pain From Hip To Leg Indicate Sciatica?

Hi Dr. Rynne, I have had a progressive condition in my right hip/lower back area that is causing me to lose sleep every night. A numbing and strong pain starts from the right hip area and spreads down the outside of my right leg if I lay on that side. If I try to sleep on my left side with my legs bent and a pillow in between my knees the pain remains and I wind up having to sleep on my back. I also experience serious discomfort when sitting in a car and have to change positions after sitting over an hour or so. I think it might be a sciatica problem, but do not know for sure. I have lost twenty pounds over the last year and do not feel this discomfort much when exercising, but concerned that it is becoming worse at night or standing for long periods of time. I look forward to any advice you can send me! Thank you! Carla Christensen Age 51

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the most common possible cause of progressive pain from hip to leg is sciatica, but again the significant weight loss over period of year is not consistent with Sciatica. There can be underlying malignancy or metastasis of spine which has to be evaluated thoroughly with history and physical examination. Discuss the need of an MRI lower lumbar spine with hip region so that the best management guidelines can be figured out.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
