Could Sciatic Pain Be Due To The Side Effect Of Saphris?

My daughter is on mental disability during last 15 years. She tried many antipsychotic medications without any progress and with many side effects. I suspect Variegate Porphyria underneath of her original symptoms given her from my late husband who had the same physical symptoms (including Psoriasis) but epilepsy instead of mental. Last several months she has problems with sleep and recently(about a month) was prescribed 10mg Saphris in addition to 20mg Zyprexa that she takes regularly. At the same time she began to suffer from sciatic pain, that not helped by Ibuprophen. Can it be the side effect of Saphris and how to help? Also, generally, could you help to find a doctor who works with somatic reasons of mental conditions and can really help her? Sincerely, Marina Gurary

Hello,

Sciatic pain is most probably not due to saphris. Sciatica has many causes like:
1) Compression of lumbar spine
2) Prolapse of intervertebral disc
3) Tumor
4) Pelvic injury or fracture
5) Pyriformis syndrome
6) Spondylolisthesis

Saphris has nothing to do with sciatic pain. The following are my suggestions:
1) Avoid prolonged sitting and standing
2) Tab. Aceclofenac twice daily would help reduce pain
3) To prevent gastric irritation, tab. Pantop once daily before food can be taken
4) Physical therapy can be beneficial
5) If muscles spasm exists, tab. Myospas once daily would help.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
