Could Several Spots On Chest, Back, Groin And Chin Relate To Neurofibromatosis ?
My daughter has one café au lait spot on her chest, six on her back, and one in her groin. They are all fairly small and the ones on her back are very close together. Recently I have noticed a small bump under her chin, but now it has grown within a few weeks to look like a non-pigmented mole. Is it possible that she has NF, even if the spots are smaller than a dime?
Hi! Welcome to HCM! Cafe-au-lait spots are light brown, oval spots . They usually appear at birth but may develop in the first few years of a child's life. Cafe-au-lait spots may be a normal type of birthmark, but the presence of several cafe-au-lait spots larger than a quarter may occur in neurofibromatosis. There are diagnostic criteria for NF1 that require at least 2 of 7 criteria. Some of these may appear in adolescence, and so diagnosis may be delayed and children should be followed up. At least six café au lait spots , at least 5 mm wide ,Axillary or inguinal freckles,Two or more typical neurofibromas and having a first-degree relative with NF1are some of the criteria. Children with 3-5 café au lait patches as your daughter, but no other signs of NF1, should be followed up. hope this helps!
