Could Severe Pain In Abdomen Be Due To Excessive Coughing?

I have had a cold all this week with lots of coughing. I have taken liquid Mucinex, and some other OTC Walgreens brand meds for colds. I have also drank Ester-C power in water and ate some AirBorne tablets. Today is the 1st day I am having this excruciating pain in my stomach. I am 50 and had a partial Hysterectomy over 7 years ago. I do not feel it is female related. Could I have irritated my abdominal muscles from coughing so much?

Hi,

Yes, it is possible for excessive coughing to cause abdominal pain. Coughing can cause strain on the abdominal muscles, which feels like discomfort or might lead to soreness. (soreness might resemble like how we feel after doing heavy exercise).

This pain will be there for about 2-3 days and gets slowly reduced. If pain is more, over-the-counter pain relievers can be taken. Take sips of hot water, hot tea or hot water mixed with lemon and honey which soothes the throat and which will alleviate cough.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks.

Hi,

I see two possibilities. It can be abdominal muscular strain due to severe coughing. It can be hyperacidity following multiple medications you had taken specially if on empty stomach. Try some antacid (like Helucil MPS over the counter). Get your CBC checked along with consultation with your family physician for advise of the needful, antibiotic, antihistamine and cough syrup.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
