Could Spotting Instead Of Heavy Flow During Period Refer To Pregnancy?

My period is always a heavy flow, usually lasting 5/7 days. Last month there was only bleeding when wipped. Redish to pinkish to brownish ....on and off for about 4 weeks. I took a hpt the day before my expected period. But it was negative. Whats the explanation for this?

Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Spotting once in a while is a normal occurrence.
IT could be due to stress, anxiety, weight gain, erratic eating or sleeping habits, thyroid hormone dysfunction, polycystic ovarian syndrome etc.
IF the spotting recurs, please schedule a gynecological consult to know the cause.
Please have a detailed internal evaluation and hormonal blood levels to know what is going on.
Have a pelvic transvaginal ultrasound scan.
ALso the following blood tests - FSH, LH, TSH, Prolactin, OGTT, DHEAS, Free testosterone etc.
A fibroid, a polyp , endometrial hyperplasia, polycystic ovarian disease, hypothyroidism - these are the conditions which should be ruled out.
Also, a blood B HCG test should be takent o rule out ectopic pregnancy or a miscarriage.
Maintain an ideal weight and exercise regularly.
Maintain menstrual charting.
All the best
Take care.
