Could Stress Cause Hair Loss?

Hello I have been gradually loosing hair over the last five months. I am a 62 year old female and have never had this problem before. I have been on drugs for nerve pain and have a discectomy op scheduled this Saturday. I had all this one year ago but no hair loss. My sister was diagnosed with throat cancer in march had her op and is ok. Three weeks later my mum died then my brother fell and broke his arm badly he is an alcoholic. I m wondering if this hair loss is stress but is that possible. Cheers chris

Hello.
I have gone through your question and understand your concern. Hair loss can be caused due to stress and even chronic illness. People tend to worry about the sudden hair loss a lot more than required, it is normal for about 100 hair strands to fall each single day and sometime it can be more than 100 due to various factors like nutritional deficiency, stress. Take multivitamins regularly along with biotin rich foods like eggs, nuts, milk products, sprouts.
Sometimes hair growth enters a phase called Telogen phase(resting phase) of growth cycle which last for a couple of months where hair starts shedding more than usual. After a couple of months hair growth re-enters Anagen phase(growing phase) on its own and cycle is repeated all over again so relax. Good luck. Hope your concern is answered. Thank You.
