Could Sunken Soft Spot In A New Born Be A Matter Of Concern?
I have a 10 day old baby girl. She hit her head on my chin while trying to move her head back. I touched her soft spot and it was sunk like a half dollar in diameter and like 1/4 deep. Within a 30 sec period it went back to normal. Me n wife r very worried. Is my baby Goin to be ok? She is actin normal and eating normal.
Hello. Welcome to HCM. This is Dr. Swarnava Dattagupta answering your query.
The soft spots in newborn babies are called fontanelles. There are anterior and posterior fontanelles which are visible and it takes a lot of time for them to fuse together. Also, skull bones in newborns are also soft and not ossified. In due time it gets tougher. So some trauma can lead to such sunk-in spots in skull which gets better automatically. Don't worry. It is not very uncommon to get such a finding in newborn baby. Still on the next postnatal visit to your doctor, you can inform him/her about this incident and get an advice about it.
Hope this was helpful. Regards
