Could Swelling And Pain In Labia Majora Be Due To Infection?

My left labia majora is swollen and very painful. I had sex with my bf and I was dry and think he may have been too rough cause I have a cut btwn my Labuan majora and minora. I also am tender to the touch in my left groin area. I have a history of a bartholin (spelling?) cyst and had it removed . I can't get in to see my gyno for almost a week. What can I do ? Is this an infection?

Hi,

According your description the possible causes of your problem are:
- Increased blood supply to labia majora during intercourse can present with swelling. Decreased lubrication during intercourse can irritate the area and can lead to swelling.
- Injuries, bruises during intercourse can present with pain and swelling.
- Infections of tissue in labia majora, folliculitis etc can also lead to pain and swelling. This can affect the surrounding tissue like groin. Sometimes infection causes swelling of lymph nodes in groin and can lead to pain.
- If you have undergone removal of lest side bartholin cyst, the possibility of recurrence is less.

If symptoms persist, clinical examination is needed to find out the possible cause and for accurate treatment. Till you consult your Gynecologist you can follow measures like:
- Cold compression
- Abstinence, avoidance of tight undergarments
- Analgesic and anti inflammatory drugs.
If needed you can go for antibiotics after consulting your doctor.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sree Gouri S. R., OBGYN
