Could Taking African Mango Cause Drug Interaction With Extented Release Metformin ?
I am currently taking 850 mg of extented release Metformin during the morning with food. I have read a lot of information on Irvingia Gaonensis (African Mango) and it s benefits on weight loss and lowering cholesterol. Is there any potential for drug interaction? I would take the 150mg twice a day.
Metformin is a well studied medication used for diabetes here in the US. African Mango is reported to have similar blood glucose lowering effects along with weight loss. African Mango can have serious interactions if taken with Metformin. The concern arises because both medications can cause Lactic Acidosis (low pH in the blood) as well as causing Kidney Failure.
Combining these medications would not be advisable and could result in severe injury of death. African Mango is reported to also be a cause of bladder cancer. In my experience I have never recommended African Mango nor would I due to the lack of clinical trials studying its safety and efficacy.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
