Could The Distended Belly Be Due To Impaction Of Colon On Lower Part?
My son has had a distended belly for about 3 weeks now. We had an xray done and they said he had an impaction in his lower part of his colon. They gave him a enema and a laxative to get him cleaned out. His belly is normal first thing in the morning. After he eats it begins to swell and it is rock hard by nighttime. He complains of pain in his stomach and also has tons of gas. What should I do?
Hi. Thanks for your query and proper history. The problem of distension due to fecal impaction, relieved by laxative and enema but recurrence after food and regaining the distension by evening has to be investigated properly. I would suggest you the following: -TO admit the child keep him on liquid diet . -Cleanse the bowel by saline enema, laxatives. -Barium studies preferably using water soluble dye. - Colonoscopy.
Once the diagnosis has been made- get an appropriate treatment instituted.
