Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Could The Lump On Left Side Of The Neck Be Due To Cancer?
Hello, I have an enlarged thyroid and a nodule on my left lobe for a few years now. I get an ultrasound done once a year an had a fine needle biopsy which came out negative. I noticed today a lump on the left side of my neck and it is noticeable and a little painful. Should I be worried about it being cancer?

Pathologist and Microbiologist, Dr. S. Samanta's Response
My brief answer is: yes!
To elaborate it, let me tell you that a long-standing thyroid lump itself is a predisposing factor for cancer and when a patient comes to me with thyroid nodule along with a lateral neck nodule or lymph node, my suspicion just doubles by itself!
Therefore, an ultrasound and an FNAC from the thyroid nodule as well as the neck node is suggested for confirmation and please share the previous needle biopsy reports/new reports with us!

Anyways, this neck nodule could also be due to recent throat infection or thyroid inflammation rather than metastatic tumor from the thyroid! Therefore, an ultrasound and an FNAC from the thyroid nodule as well as the neck node is suggested for confirmation and please share the previous needle biopsy reports/new reports with us! regards,
