Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Could Throat Cancer Be Due To Exposure To Agent Orange?
I got squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil after I stopped smoking for twenty years. I did not smoke menthol and smoked less than a pack a day. I was exposed to Agent Orange thirty years before I got it. Which do you think caused the cancer? Agent Orange includes phalanx and lung cancer. I got an addendum from my ENT saying that tonsil cancer should be included since it is so close to the phalanx. I am now 20 years cancer free.
Tobacco smoking and regular intake of high amount of alcohol are the main risk factors of developing carcinoma tonsil It has also been linked to a virus called Human Papilloma Virus. Exposure to herbicide has been linked to many types of cancer including lymphomas and leukemia.
But the association between the harmful herbicide and basal, squamous cell carcinoma is unclear and not proven scientifically.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
