Could Tiredness, imbalance And Pulsating Of Pupils Be Caused By Head Injury?

I had a large and heavy item fall onto my head the other day . it almost knocked me out . I have noticed some changes in my awareness and extra tired as well. possibly a bit off balance too . today I noticed that my pupils are pulsating . is this just a typical reaction to a concussion and should subside soon ? thank you

Hello. Thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. It is good that you have noticed all these findings. The answer to your question is yes regarding possible occurrence of tiredness and imbalance. But pulsation of pupils is normal. As pupils are very small in size and are dark, pulsation of pupil is usually missed by us. But when you closely observe by looking inside mirror, you can see alternate constriction and dilation of pupils ( also known as Hippus ). So pulsation of pupil is normal finding.

Now coming to tiredness and imbalance, both these findings are very important findings after head injury. It might suggest some lesion in brain like increased pressure or bleed. It might also be due to headache after head injury. You have to closely observe alarming signs like decrease in consciousness, loss of consciousness, fits, bleed through nose/ear/throat, memory impairment, onset of new focal deficit, vomiting. My advise to you is consult ER as soon as possible, till then watch for alarming signs, avoid any drugs which can cause sedation, keep level of head higher than chest, avoid bending forward and straining.

At ER, you might be advised CT head to rule out skull bone fracture, bleed in brain or brain edema. You might be kept under observation for some time.

Thanks. Hope it will help you. Take care.
