Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Could White Furrowing And Changes In Mucosa Be Related To Eosinophilic Esophagitis?
After a lifetime of respiratory and GI issues with no diagnosis, a recent EGD showed white furrowing and severe ringing in my lower esophagus. Biopsies showed no Eosinophilis. (This episode was brought on by straying from my ketogenic diet by eating a pop tart.) A cause has yet to be determined but we have always suspected food allergies. Can this kind of ringing, white furrowing and changes in the mucosa be anything but Eosinophilic esophagitis?
Eosinophilic esophagitis have rings inside the esophagus with histological findings of granulocytes that is eosinophils inside the epithelial cells. But absence of eosinophils rules out the diagnosis. Gastro esophageal reflux disease is the condition in which the gastric acid gets into the lower esophagus due to weak lower esophageal sphincter. The acid reflux damages the lower esophageal lining and cause esophagitis and rings. GERD also has granuocytes such as neutrophils and eosinophil infiltration.
Lymphocytic esophagitis is a condition similar to Eosinophilic esophagitis with lymphocytic infiltration in the lining tissue with esophageal rings. The symptoms are difficulty in swallowing solid foods, retrosternal discomfort, etc. Proton pump inhibitors are the agents that decrease the acid secretion in the stomach which helps to reduce the symptoms due to acidity. Histamine receptor blocker are the alternative to Proton pump inhibitors which inhibits acid secretion. Antacids are prescribed to reduce acidity. Discuss with the Gastroenterologist for further management.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
