Dark Patches Where Nose Meets Eye. Cause?

I have developed dark patches starting where the nose meets the eye and up around the eyelid in a c shape. It appears as if I have dark bruises on either side of the top of the nose just under the eye and running around the lid to mid lid. Do you have any idea what could have caused these? I am a woman of 51years of age.

Hello,

It is most likely to be due to melasma.It is hyperpigmentation of the skin mostly around the eyes, nose and cheeks. Exact cause is not known but is known to occur both in men and women, more so in those with hormonal imbalance, sun tanning, side effect of medicines such as birth control pills. You can consider a visit to your physician who can evaluate the hormone levels ( estrogen/progestrone) and try to rule out any hormonal imbalance. If these levels are found to be normal, then a trial of sunscreen and skin lightening cream can be given a try ( can be given by a dermatologist).
