Dark Spots On Lips Due To Smoking. Tried Quitting, No Relief. Treatment Options?
Hi I m xxxx I m 25 years old I started smoking 5 years ago and I developed dark spots on my lips both upper and lower but mainly notable on the lower lip . I m really frustrated because I was never a heavy smoker and I ve tried quitting for a month to get rid of the discoloration and it kept on persisting it is really frustrating to see people smoke way more than I do and yet have perfect pink lips can you please tell me what s wrong with me and how can I treat this? Thank you
Smoking can cause dark or brown pigmentation/dark spots on lips.
These dark spots may be due to the nicotine staining, tiny painless burns, decreased oxygenation in the underlying tissue.
Degree of pigmentation/dark spots depends upon :
-duration of smoking,
-number of cigarettes smoked per day,
-type of your skin and mucosa.
Pigmentation of lips can vary from person to person even with the same duration of smoking.
If you quit smoking, there are chances of decrease in dark spots over a period of few months and over time the skin will begin to lighten but whether it will return to previous color is not sure.
Application of lightening creams and medicines are available that may help you for speedy and better recovery.
Get dermatologist opinion for clinical correlation.
Hope this could help you.For more queries you can write to HCM.
