Depo Shot For 18 Months. No Periods, Cramps During Shots. Now Cramps And Spotting. Pregnancy Test Negative.Pregnant?

Hi. I've been on the depo shot for 18 months. I've never had periods or cramps while on this. 29 days ago I had unprotected sex, and again 10 days ago. Well, the past two days, I've had cramps and some spotting. I took a pregnancy test two days ago, & came back negative. I'm just worried because I've had cravings, cramps, and spotting the past fed days and this is the first time in 18 months that this has happened. I'm due for my next shot July 1st. I'm scared, could I be pregnant?!

Hello,
thanks for using health care magic.

Depo is a progesterone contraceptive that prevents pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation as one of its principal mechanism.

Depo is particularly very effective and while on depo, bleeding abnormalities are not uncommon ranging from spotting to absence of menses.

With prolonged and effective use of depo, ovulation is inhibited effectively and
it is rare to have a pregnancy.

However, you could re do a pregnancy test later to be sure its not a pregnancy.

Hope this helps you.
Best regards
Dr Achuo
