Diabetes, High BP, Routine Blood Test Showed Elevated ALT, AST, Positive Hepatitis C, Tumor On Liver
My father went for a routine blod test and his ALT and AST came back elevated (188 and 120). He had no pain or any symtoms, doctor said it was positive for Hepatitis C , sent him for a sonogram and more blood work. Results came back with high sugar, high ALT/AST and a tumor on his liver . Is this a common result? He has diabetes and high blood pressure and taking pills for it every day. Thanks
Alanine transaminase (ALT) and Aspartate Transaminase (AST) are enzymes secreted in liver. A value above 100 is considered significant. Accordingly what your father had was a significant rise in liver enzymes. Liver enzymes are elevated due to inflammatory liver condition (hepatitis), alcohol consumption, tumours and so on. In the absence of significant clinical history, drug intake and alcohol consumption, all physician perform investigations such as serological tests for hepatitis and ultrasound scans to rule out other causes.
Hepatitis C is diagnosed based on positive serological tests. Ultrasound examination can pick up structural causes such as tumour.
High blood sugars and high blood pressure are not directly responsible for high liver enzymes and development of tumour. Discuss with his gastroenterologist for the next steps of management.
Hope this answers your query.
Wish your father a good recovery.
Best regards
