Diabetic, Diagnosed With Fibromyalgia. Having Low Blood Sugar, Fibro Symptoms Flaring. Is It Lacto Acidosis Caused By Metformin?
Hi, I am searching for information for my mother. She has had type 2 diabetes, and fibromyalgia for ten years now. Recently she has been having severe problems with her blood sugar being too low and her fibro symptoms flaring. I have been doing some online reasearch and have found that Metformin ( she has been taking this medication for an extended time) can cause lactic acidosis. That seems to have a lot of the same symptoms she has been having. Is it possible that she has this problem and they have been calling it fibro? I can't seem to find if lactic acidosis is something that only gets very bad very fast or if you can endure it for a very long time. Thank you for your help.
Hello, Normally metformin doesn't result in lactic acidosis, although very high doses of metformin, continuing metformin in severe dehydration or severe kidney and liver diseases can result in lactic acidosis. There are distinct features of lactic acidosis like nausea, vomiting, pain abdomen, hyperventilation, tachycardia etc which can clearly differentiate between lactic acidosis and fibromyalgia. It is not possible for your doctor to have missed lactic acidosis, had it been There. Thanks
