Pathologist and Microbiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Pain and numbness of the great toe of the foot is likely due to Diabetic neuropathy.
This is one of the complications of long standing diabetes.
This is caused by the damage to the peripheral nerves due to prolonged hyperglycemia.
For this condition I advise my patient to go for
Nerve conduction study to confirm the diagnosis.
Tight control of blood sugar to prevent further damage to the nerves.
Medicines like Gabapentin to control the neurological pain.

Diabetologist Dr. Pratap VGM's  Response
Dear sir/madam

Pain and numbness in the feet is caused due to hyperglycemia, if it is happenening as a microvascular complication the it is irreversible.
It all depends upon the history, control and duration of disease.
What you can do is to get your fundus examination done, if you have any changes in the fundus then it might be due to neuropathy
Try to control your blood sugars at the recommended target, if it is happening due to hyperglycemia then it will be reversible.
There are many drugs available such as vitamin b12, pyridoxine and alpha lipoic acid, pregabalin or gabapentin.
Try to discuss with your doctor once regarding the option for selecting the drugs.

Thanks
