Diagnosed B Cell Leukemia, Receiving Chemotherapy On 4th Cycle, Recommended For Cord Transplant. Suggestion?
Hi There,
My son is 10 month old and was diagnosed with ALL B Cell type Leukemia around 4 months ago.
My Son was initially getting treatment from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital however now we have shifted him to AIIMS and now we are consulting Dr. Sameer Bakshi at IRCH-AIIMS.
My son has been receiving Chemotherapy from last 4 month and has completed 3 cycles of chemo.and is currently in cycle 4. Doctors at AIIMS has told us that his response to treatment is good. Now doctors at AIIMS have recommended for Cord Transplant to us
First of all, the treatment that your child is undergoing is correct and scientific. Also, you are getting treatment at the right place and with the right doctor. It is customary to give initial chemotherapy and once the cancer responds (which is known as the disease being in remission) to offer bone marrow transplant to the patient. This is technically a simple procedure in which the marrow of the donor is just injected into the blood of the recipient. However it needs to be done at a dedicated centre with precautions regarding infections to which the patient is predisposed during the procedure. Also, the success rate is near 50%. However, it is a recommended procedure in your case and you should go ahead with it if you can find a suitably matched donor.
