Diagnosed For Bells Palsy, Enlarged Eye, Not Able To Move The Mouth. Taken Steroids. When Will It Be Normal?
Hello, My son was diagnosed with Bells palsy on June 11,2013.He was on steroids for 7 days.He is able to shut his eye (with small amount of effort ) and the blinking is much better. He is also able to move his mouth and when he forces a smile it is 95% symmetric. However when he smiles naturally it is a lopsided still and his affected eye is bigger than the regular eye.It is 38 days since he was afflicted. When will he return to normal ? Regards, Priya

General & Family Physician, Dr. Lohit K's Response
Hi Priya, Thanks for using HCM.
Bells palsy is due to any effect on facial nerve. It will regain to normal if we remove the pressure on it. Now steroids are reducing the oedema/inflammation and hence reducing the pressure effect some where in its course. So complete recovery happens when all the pressure effect ids removed. Some times he may require surgery to regain it and early removal of pressure will have better recovery. Consult your doctor for examination and management. Hope I answered your question. Feel free to ask me if you have any further queries. Wish you good health. Take care.
Regards Dr.Lohit
