Diagnosed With Acute Right Mastoiditis, Never Completely Got Over It. Pain On Left Side Due To Middle Ear Infection. Causes ?

I was diagnosed with Acute right Mastoiditis in November of 2012. I have never completely gotton over this and now the pain is on my left side and pretty severe. They say it is caused by a middle ear infection , however Dr s have never found an infection and I have never ran a fever? I also have had 2 ct scans, one at the hospital where I was originally diagnosed. What could be causing this?

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. The mastoiditis is probably secondary to an Eustachian Tube Dysfunction (ETD).

2. The decreased ventilation may be causing a build-up of normal secretions in the mastoid air cells and middle ear. As the body absorbs the oxygen, there is a relative rise in the carbon dioxide levels in the middle ear and mastoid. This further increases the secretions, setting up a viscous cycle. These trapped secretions may get infected causing pain and pressure.

3. Since bone has a poor blood supply, controlling infection in the mastoid is difficult. Is your hearing normal?

4. Get a Tympanogram (Impedance Audiogram) done to check for ETD. Upload your CT Scan images, the ear examination findings and audiometry tests for further advice at bit.ly/Dr-Sumit-Bhatti
