Diagnosed With PPCM. On Carvedilol, Lisiniprol, Sporonolactone. Severe Cough, Hairfall. Side Effects?

Hello
My concern is the medication I am currently on. Last November 2012 I gave birth to a healthy baby boy. The week I came home I noticed I was not feeling myself and immediately contacted my dr. After EKG's and an echocardiogram I was diagnosed with PPCM. My cardiologist has prescribed me Carvedilol, lisiniprol and sporonolactone. Few months into treatment I started with an annoying cough that would wake me from my sleep or when I am talking. The next thing was hair loss. As you may know this can be very distressing to a female. I stuck through it but had to inform my dr on what was happening she recommended changing beta blockers to Metoporol. I have been on this one for almost a month. The hair loss slowed down but still a problem. After enough reading and research I am starting to wonder if it is in fact lisiniprol. I am on the smallest dose 2.5mg. I am unsure if I should ask my dr to take me off of the BP meds? Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thank you Amal

Hi, thank you for posting.

We can understand easily that you suffer from PPCM from symptoms you refer. Hair loose is caused by lisinopril. And severe cough is caused by lisinopril and by the disease.
To avoid side effects you should change lisinopril with ARB group medicament. I recommend you to use Olmesartan medoxomil(Trade names: Benicar, WinBP, Olmetec).
You need an INR test of blood.
You also need anticoagulation to avoid a possible thrombosis of blood vessels for example: Acenocoumarol(SINTROMĀ®) or Warfarin in the base of result of INR test of blood.

Take care of yourself.

Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Ram Choudhary's  Response
Hi Amal,
Welcome to healthcare Magic!
The medicines you are having are not only antihypertensive but they are very good medicines for controlling the cardiac failure related to PPCM.
The cause for your irritant cough is surely the Lisinopril and stopping it will clear the problem of cough in a week's time but it is not a cause for hair fall.
You may be having excess stress or nutritional deficiency as a cause of hair fall.Try to handle stress do regular exercise, ensure sufficient intake of dietary nutrients.
Do not manipulate the drugs by yourself, consult your local physician for these crucial decisions.
Please consult a local dermatologist.
I hope the advise would be informative and useful for you.
Take Care!
