Diagnosed With Colloid Goiter, Lump On Throat Seems To Be Enlarging. FNAC, Scan Reports Normal. Cause Of Worry?
Hi, I am a 40 year old woman, last April I was diagnosed with colloid goiter , did fnac and scanning all reports are normal, including thyroid hormones, there is no nodules, my doctor has explained that the lump which is now notable on my throat is slightly getting bigger, and that there is nothing to be worried off as there is only fluid in it. I took thyroxine tab 50 mg for 6 months. Since my gland is enlarging i am a bit worried....doctor says surgery is the only option.

Your doctor has rightly advised you as colloid goiter with FNAC and scan proven hormonal inactivity has proved its benign nature.
However enlargement and long term pressure on the underlying air-pipe (trachea0 can later cause problems.
So surgery to relieve pressure is sometimes needed.
Keep a watch on noisy breathing, breathlessness, hoarseness of voice etc.
Keep regular follow up.

A colloid goiter, or an endemic goiter, is a thyroid gland which has become enlarged due to a lack of iodine.
The symptoms of a colloid goiter may not develop until the growth is large enough to put pressure on nearby structures, such as the trachea and esophagus
Treating colloid goiters generally involves adding extra iodine to the diet and avoiding those foods which interfere with the thyroid's use of iodine and indirectly stimulate goiter growth. The outlook for someone with a colloid goiter is usually positive once treatment is carried out.
