Diagnosed With Emphasemia And Having Cough. Losing Weight. What To Do?

My mother who is almost 81 has just been diagnosed with emphasemia. She is still smoking. She tells me it is only a mild case but to me no case is mild. I told her to go to the Dr as her cough is awful. She is 5 ft and always loosing weight. She is 48 kg. I did get her weight up to 51 kg. She does cook but I Take her nutritious meals and see she eats them. She says if she has to cook she can't be bothered to eat. She has polymialga and is on steroid medication plus emphasemia and blood pressure medication. As a result of the steroids she us black and blue and her skin is so so thin - as is she. We are currently selling her home and buying a smaller place with care options in a retirement village .
It will only get worse won't it? Is it too late fir her to stop smoking? Thank you. Anne

General & Family Physician 's  Response
It's never too late to stop smoking however there won't be complete recovery on stopping smoking but it will definitely improve emphysema and reduce the speed of progression. since age is increasing so weight will also keep reducing however this speed of weight reduction will reduce with good care which you are already taking.
Do not over stress your self with this issue

Hope this information helps you
