Diagnosed With Hypothyroidism, Low TSH Level, Depression. Off Synthroid, On Antidepressant. What Do I Need To Do?

Hi, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in 2000, and in 2002 I was diagnosed with depression. I was treated with medication for both. About two years ago, my doctor took me off the synthroid, because my tsh level was low and I felt jittery. However, I still feel the same symptoms of hypothyroidism. I am taking an antidepressant, but I still feel depression. I've also complained to my doctor and several psychiatrists that I sometimes feel a sudden jolt out of no where, and at times I've heard a sound that would accompany the jolt. I sometimes feel the jolt through my arms and back. So far, no one really seem to know what I'm talking about, not even my neurologist. However, one psychiatrist did tell me he heard of this, but doesn't know what it is. Sorry, I don't have any money to pay for your service.

Addiction Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi,

Depression doesn't respond well to antidepressants if the thyroid status is not normal. Please get your blood tested for free T3, free T4 and TSH levels. If the free T3 and T4 levels are low, you will again need supplementation of thyroid hormone. The jolt that you are describing appears to be an exaggerated startle response that patients with anxiety often describe. I do not feel it is something to worry about.

Hope you find this helpful. Best wishes.
