Diagnosed With Painful Fibroids. Considering Vaginal Hysterectomy Over Abdominal. Which Procedure Offers A Faster Cure?

I just had an pelvic and an ultrasound n probe exam and was found to have large and painful fibroids. The fibroids are 7 x 6 1/2 cm. There is no fluid in the cul-de-sac. I wanted another opinion if I could have the vaginal hysterectomy instead of the abdominal. I was told it be less time in the hospital, faster recovery time at home, and more cost efficient.

Hi,
Welcome to Health Care Magic,
it is true that after vaginal Hysterectomy, recovery is fast, post operative period is less painful, and hospital stay is less, but if you have to undergone Hysterectomy for a large uterus with painful and big Fibroid, Abdominal Hysterectomy would be better choice. There are advantages and disadvantages of both type. it is easier to control bleeding, better exposure, and more room to do resection of fibrous tissue in Abdominal Hysterectomy. Vaginal hysterectomy is preferable in normal sized uterus, and with lax vagina walls. Vaginal Hysterectomy needs better surgical skills, and experienced gynecologist who feels comfortable in doing by vaginal route. It is always a possibility to end up doing Abdominal hysterectomy even when it was planned as vaginal Hysterectomy due to several difficulties encountered during vaginal Hysterectomy. There are several centers where Doctors perform combine route hysterectomy also. It depends also on Surgeon's choice.
In your case, my opinion is to go for Abdominal Hysterectomy, but you can always discuss with your Doctor about the suitability of vaginal Hysterectomy in your individual case.
I hope I have answered your query.
All the Best
