Diarrhea, Stomach Cramps After Taking Metformin. Are They Due To Side Effects?
I have been taking Metformin for 4 weeks. Started one pill a day for a week, then two, then three. For the past week I have been taking 2 in the morning and 2 with dinner. I have had some diarrhea, but not two bad. My period started on Monday. Tuesday and Wednesday, I have had pain in my stomach (above my belly button and 2" higher). Feel almost like contractions. Feels a little better if I sit still (does not completely stop), but if I walk around it gets stronger. I called the doctors office and was told to ask the pharmacist. Pharmacist said it could be the medication and did not recommend to change anything. I did not call the doctor back.
Hello, Although nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and cramps abdomen are common side effects of metformin but since you are complaining of pain abdomen only since you started your periods, metformin looks less likely to be the culprit. However there is nothing to be worried and there is no need to change the medications at the moment. If your symptoms do not subside in another few days or if the pain worsens, then you may talk to your doctor and think of reducing the dose of metformin. I hope it helps. Thanks
