Difficult To Swallow. Barium Swallow Report Normal, Put On Nexium, Discomfort Below Breasts. GERD ?
I am a twenty-three year old female. On Nov. 3, I started having issues of not being ablle to swallow properly. It was difficult, and I felt like the food got stuck. Saw a dcotr and I had a barium swallow done that came back normal. I was put on Nexium 40 mg once a day. I ve had some mild discomfort in the area right below my breasts. Could I have GERD . Also, I am scheduled to see a GI doctor Dec. 19.
Dear kideyton, You could definitely have GERD but... swallowing difficulties are not actually the first symptom of GERD but feeling of tightness in your chest is. It is usually associated with hearburn, epigastric pain after eating, regurgitation of bitter acid up into the throat while sleeping or bending over, bitter taste in the mouth, dry cough, hoarseness. If you have some of these than you should do gastroscopy. Barium swallow cannot visualize oesophageal and gastric mucosa. Also you can do PHmetry and stomach biopsy to rule out H.Pylori infection. Nexium should be helpful, if not then ask your doctors about other drugs such as antacids and ranitidinum.
Wish you good health, Dr. Ivan Romic (Rominho)
