Some persons who report waking up suddenly during sleep due to difficulty breathing may have a condition called obstructive sleep apnoea.
Obstructive sleep apnoea is a condition where the airway can become blocked off during sleep causing the person to wake up.It is associated with day time sleepiness, restless sleep and snoring. It can also result in headaches, high blood pressure and trouble concentrating in the day. Diagnosis requires a sleep study.
It may be best to speak to your doctor who may perform a screening test to determine if sleep disorder is occurring, he or she may then (based on the results) refer your mother to a sleep specialist for further evaluation.
I hope this helps
