Discolored Vaginal Discharge After Childbirth. Is This Normal? Have Back Pain
hi, i had my little girl 8 weeks ago and only had post partum bleeding for 12 days and 5 days of yellowish discharge . i then had a period at 5 weeks and 3 days post partum that was relatively heavy that lasted 12/13 days and it stopped a week ago. today i now have red mucusy discharge/bleeding and was wondering if this is normal or not?? i have had fairly bad backache since having baby - due to her being back to back all the way through labour and 5 failed attempts of epidural (kept hitting blood vessels in spine ). the bleeding today is like eggwhites but red (blood) rather than clear. should i see my gp?? thanks for your time
Hi bonny,
Thanks for writing in to Healthcare Magic!
The excessive vaginal discharge after delivery is secreted from the raw surcafe of placenta attachment, which is brown in first week and is termed as lochia rubra.
Later in second week it becomes serous white so lochia alba.
still later the secretions become normal.
This phenomenon is essentially a normal occurrence and should not cause worry.
If you have any further query please let me know I would try to answer it for you.
Wish you a great health!
After delivery till around three to four weeks some amount of discharge can be seen which is called lochia.
In non breastfeeding mothers periods can return early.
But as you had 12 to 13 days bleeding during periods and again bleeding started within one week after that better to consult gynecologist once to get examined and undergo ultrasound to rule out any retained products or endometritis.
Take care.
