I am having a lot of bouts of diverticulosis - severe pain, either onset by diarrehea or constipation. Most of the pain is in the lower left side. I have had to use suppositories and I also use Senocot. My family doctor has told me to use metamucill as this is the best fibre. I drink lots of water but this bloats me. I am contemplating have a bowel re-structure. What do you think. I am 70 years old. Thank you.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi ! Good morning. I am Dr Shareef, a general surgeon answering your query.

From your said history as described by you, it appears that the symptoms from your diverticulosis/diverticulitis has become quite frequent and severe, which may not respond to the conservative management. In that case you have to discuss about this with a surgeon nearby you for the possibility of a surgery in which the port of the bowel having troublesome diverticulosis is resected and an end to end anastomosis is done.

However, regular follow ups after surgery with modifications of your life style, and intake of lot of roughage and plenty of water is essential to prevent further formation of the diverticular disease in remaining part of colon.

I hope I have answered your query. Wishing you an early recovery. Thanks.

General & Family Physician Dr. Veera Raghava Rao Buddha.'s  Response
Hi, at this age it may not be preferable to have bowel restructure, as you are happy with the medicines, and laxatives, it is better to stick to them.
I doubt there is amoebiasis as well, i to my patient with such symptoms prescribe ofloxacin, matronidazole, for limited time and omeprazole, for long time. Thank you.
