Do Amlodipine Besylate And Atorvastatin Cause Pain In The Knees?
I am taking Iresbastan 300mg/Hctz for couple years without any side effect. Recently, my cardiologist adds Amlodipine Besylate 5 mg, and atorvastatin 10mg. Now, I have muscle pain and knee, shoulder pain. There is also swelling on the knee joint2. Are the 2 new medications caused all these problem? Thanks.
Yes, these new medicines seem to be responsible for muscle pain. If taken together, the blood pressure lowering medication amlodipine may significantly increase the blood levels of simvastatin. It can increase the risk of muscle damage and a rare but serious condition called rhabdomyolysis that involves the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue. In some cases, rhabdomyolysis can cause kidney damage.
So, consult you to prescribe an alternative effective medication to lower the high blood cholesterol such as cholestyramine or other medication that does not interact with amlodipine.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
