Do Cortisone Shots Cause Adverse Long Term Side Effects?
I m trying to decide if I should have a Oxford Partial knee repair done or just take Cortisone shot every four months. My pain in not too bad but without the cortisone shot it is hard to bowl and workout at the gym. I am Seventy years old and feel like fifty. So my question is how does a Cortisone shot affect you long term and how bad?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Cortisone to the knee can be very helpful for joint pain, there is little systemic absorption and side effects. It is mainly used in persons with severe pain secondary to the arthritis. In the early stages, pain meds and physio are mainly used but the shots are an option. Can be used every 3 to 6 months.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
