Hello, A 65 year old female has been on a hypertension medication (losartan 50mg and Amlodipine 5mg) for 17 years and early 2014 the patient started to exhibit memory problems especially recalling new or current information sometimes but not always. Can medications cause it?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The medications he is using are not been found to cause for memory problems. What I am concerned that his primary problem ie. hypertension can cause minute infarct in the brain and cause memory problem or vascular dementia.

There are a lot of causes for impaired memory. He should see a neurologist if there is any reversible cause of his memory problem and that could be treated. I don't think it's the medicine causing it.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman
