Do Wellbutrin, Cymbalta And Mood Stabilizers Help Cure Bipolar Disorder?

Why do psychiatrists prescribe Wellbutrin AND Cymbalta plus a mood stabilizer to a patient in treatment of bipolar disorder? Also, I am an LCSW and one of my patients is being prescribed Wellbutrin, Cymbalta, Topamine and Depakote. So, in my mind, she is getting two antidepressants plus two mood stabilizers. Can you explain what the thinking in either of these cases might be?

Hello,

No, couldn't say in a case I am not involved in. I do not believe that Cymbalta is FDA approved for bipolar disease. Furthermore, it is not generally recommended to double up on anti-depressants because they can produce an overdose of serotonin when doubled up.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
