Do Antibiotics Cause Vomiting?

Can antibiotics cause you to throw up? My husband has been sick for a week-nauseous and vomiting. He has a cough and is spitting up mucus also. He is tired and weak. The care center gave him antibiotics to take for his cough and for a cyst that they drained on his leg. He has no appetite.

Hello and thank you for using healthcaremagic.

I understand your concern about the situation. Actually it is true that antibiotics cause vomiting. It is due to the fact that most antibiotics cause some form of irritation to the inner lining of the digestive tract, which causes a lot of common problems including vomiting, gastritis, abdominal bloating, loss of appetite, among others. While these side effects are not serious normally, they do put some stress on the person taking the medication.

Thankfully there are a few things your husband can do to avoid or at least reduce the symptoms of the vomiting.
These include, taking the medications on time, properly spaced meals. Avoiding spicy, hard to digest food, alcohol of any kind during the treatment course as it adds to the irritation of the gut and increases vomiting.

You can also take medicines to reduce the symptoms, as most of them go well with antibiotics, though in your husband's case, I would prefer you to ask your doctor as I don't have the name of your antibiotic. Most of the anti vomiting drugs are available over the counter.

Hoping that your husband gets well soon.

I hope to have cleared up your query with adequate information. Feel free to ask any follow up queries you may have.

Thanks again.
