Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Do Antidepressants Cause Low White Blood Cell Count?
My white blood cell count is below 500. I take several different medications that may cause this including many antidepressants. Quetiapine may be causing very low neutrophils but not taking quetiapine is not an option. Almost all the meds I take cause neutropenia. What can I do? Which meds. do you think could be causing this.
welcome to the 'Ask a Doctor' service. I've read your query carefully and I can say that there are many important details missing. Although you've mentioned drugs besides quetiapine, you've haven't specified which they are.
Quetiapine indeed causes neutropenia and this a rather common side effect. Despite that checking for other causes of neutropenia is recommended before attributing everything to quetiapine. If no hematological disorders can be documented then substituting it with another drug is an option.
I hope I've answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Kind Regards!
