Do Confused State And Slurred Speech At The Age Of 91 Suggest Stroke?

my mother is 91 years of age. We have just been through a very difficult time with her younger sister, she was on dialisys for over 6 years /was diabetic and had complications from the diabetis, she just died and we had her funeral yesterday. My mother seemed to have come through all the stress fairly well I thought, but tonight after I came home from work and was trying to talk to her I realized she was having trouble putting her thoughts and words together. Is it possible that shee has had a stroke or something? There are no other signs but the slurred words and her being unable to put her thoughts together. I am really worried. any advise would be appreciated Thanks Linda Reams

thank you for posting your query in healthcaremagic.com....

see slurred speech and problem with cognition are features of stroke but they are not necessarily associated with strokes only....there are many other reasons behind that....
her age is 91...at this age, mild dementia can start and these things can happen in dementia a well...or if a TIA has happened, these can be associated, but they should be better in sometime....
also if your mother had co morbid conditions like hypertension, diabetes, heart disease etc associated previously, then a chance of mild stroke is there....

i will suggest you to take her to a neurologist...
a scan can be done, some other tests will be performed and the diagnosis can be made....

hope this was helpful....
regards
