Do Episodes Of Violent Trembling Along With Weakness Suggest Dementia?

thank you. I have been experiencing what I call spells for about a year now and they are getting worse. What happens is that I start trembling quite violently(having difficulty typing) then I get very weak and feel like my body is trembling inside too; with this comes a feeling that I will fall down. I have stairs and when this happens I have to hold the banister with both hands. This feeling would go away in an hour or so, however now it sometimes lasts for days. Also, my skin is collapsing and my hair is falling out. When I try to push through it I perspire so much from my head that my hair becomes drenched and often my shoulders too. My last doctors visit I experienced one of these attacks in her office. She put me in ER,checked my blood sugar and did an ecg and heart monitor and a couple of others I can.t remember. Nothing, so she sent me to an internal specialist and he did a full range of tests, again nothing. I feel there is something seriously wrong. Specialists tests were done a few months ago and I continue to decline and get weaker. My major exercise is going up and down my stairs up to 20 times per day but still getting weaker and shakier. email is YYYY@YYYY . My sister died of dementia at 77, I don t know her symptoms as she lived far away. I am only 69.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The current issue of trembling with weakness sounds to be part of an underlying neurologic disorder which can be part of dementia or else.

I would request to proceed with detailed neurologic evaluation, reflexes and MRI brain as primary work up.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Purva Patel,
General & Family Physician
